![]() The first night, I did the karate and poi making. Over the next two days, we rotated between 4 activities: snorkeling, kayaking, poi making, and a type of karate that I cannot remember the name of. We went back for lunch and then split into groups. There were lots of stands with fresh fruit, organic beers, meats, cheeses, seafood, jewelery…you name it. Matakana is a slow town, which means there are no neon lights, franchise stores, or billboards. We were woken up at 8 for breakfast, and then drove to the Matakana Farmers Market. Thanks to the earplugs mom sent me here with, I was able to overcome the sounds of sleeping next to 50 people, many who were snoring through the night. It was a little corny, but a decent movie. ![]() ![]() To end the night, we set up a bigscreen in the Marae and watched Whale Rider as a group. Though there were a lot of us, it was cool to find out things about the people I was with that I did not know before. Bianca, the leader of the trip, stood up and talked for 10 minutes about her life, background, and we really got to know a lot about her. I thought this was going to be another boring introduction where everyone says something along the lines of, “Hi, I’m Brittany and I am a junior Elementary Ed major.” However, when we began I was pleasantly surprised. We were served dinner and then headed back inside for a Whakawhanaungatanga, which is a tradition in the Maori culture where everyone sits in a circle and stands up to introduce themselves. Our cots were edge to edge and we were given sleeping bags and pillows to sleep on. There were 50 of us, all lined up in cots inside the Marae, which is not very big. We drove there and received a traditional powhiri, or welcome, from the owners of the Marae. For those of you who don’t know (I sure didn’t before we went) the web defines a Marae as “a sacred place which served both religious and social purposes in pre-Christian Polynesian societies.” Te Kiri was about 2 hours away and we were picked up Friday at 5 in a bunch of vans.
